Water Filter System with MBR Membrane and Reverse Osmosis System

The Water Filter System with MBR Membrane and Reverse Osmosis System is an advanced integrated wastewater treatment and water purification solution designed for applications requiring high-quality treated water, efficient solid-liquid separation, and deep removal of dissolved contaminants. By combining Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology with Reverse Osmosis (RO), the system creates multiple treatment barriers for municipal sewage, domestic wastewater, industrial wastewater, and water recycling applications.

MBR and RO perform different functions within the treatment process. The MBR section combines biological treatment with membrane filtration to remove biodegradable organic matter, activated sludge, suspended solids, and many microorganisms. The downstream RO section uses pressure-driven membrane separation to reduce dissolved salts, ions, and other dissolved contaminants. Research has demonstrated that MBR-RO systems can produce high-quality water suitable for a variety of recycling applications.

MBR Membrane Water Filtration

The MBR membrane is the core filtration component of the biological wastewater treatment stage.

In a conventional activated sludge process, a secondary clarifier is normally used to separate biological solids from treated water. In an MBR system, microfiltration or ultrafiltration membranes perform this solid-liquid separation function.

Wastewater first enters the biological reactor. Microorganisms consume biodegradable organic pollutants, while controlled aeration supplies oxygen for biological treatment. The mixed liquor then contacts the membrane surface.

Water passes through the membrane as permeate, while activated sludge and suspended solids remain in the bioreactor.

This configuration provides excellent solids retention and allows the biological treatment process to operate with a relatively high concentration of active microorganisms.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration

The RO system provides the advanced purification stage following MBR treatment.

Reverse osmosis uses high pressure to force water through a semipermeable membrane. Dissolved salts, ions, and many other dissolved substances are rejected to a significant degree while purified water passes through as permeate.

RO is particularly valuable when the final application requires lower conductivity, lower TDS, reduced dissolved inorganic contaminants, or additional removal of dissolved organic and trace contaminants.

For this reason, MBR followed by RO is frequently considered for advanced wastewater reclamation and industrial water reuse. Studies of MBR-RO systems have reported high-quality recycled water and effective removal of various organic, inorganic, and microbial contaminants, depending on the system design and operating conditions.

How the MBR RO Water Filter System Works

A typical integrated process can be configured as:

Pretreatment → Equalization → Biological Treatment → MBR Membrane → Cartridge Filtration → High-Pressure Pump → RO System → Disinfection → Reuse Water

The exact process flow should be customized according to wastewater quality and the final water-use requirements.

Pretreatment

Screens and other pretreatment equipment remove large solids, plastics, fibers, hair, sand, and other materials that could damage pumps or membranes.

Additional processes such as oil separation, coagulation, or chemical treatment may be required for specific industrial wastewater.

Biological Treatment

The biological reactor provides biodegradation of organic pollutants. Depending on the project, aerobic and anoxic zones can be incorporated for carbon removal, nitrification, denitrification, and nutrient control.

MBR Membrane Filtration

The MBR membrane separates activated sludge from treated water. This provides a strong physical barrier against suspended solids and helps produce low-turbidity permeate.

RO Pretreatment

Depending on the MBR effluent quality, cartridge filters or other polishing processes may be installed before the RO unit.

Reverse Osmosis

The RO membrane performs deep filtration of dissolved contaminants and reduces TDS and conductivity according to the selected membrane and operating conditions.

Final Water Treatment

Depending on the intended reuse application, UV, chlorination, remineralization, pH adjustment, or other post-treatment can be incorporated.

High-Efficiency MBR Membrane Filtration

The MBR stage provides several important benefits before RO treatment.

First, the membrane retains activated sludge and suspended solids. Second, biological treatment reduces biodegradable organic loading. Third, the low-solids MBR permeate can provide a more suitable feedwater for downstream advanced treatment.

However, MBR permeate is not automatically suitable for every reuse application. Dissolved salts, nutrients, soluble organics, trace contaminants, and final public-health requirements must be evaluated according to the intended use. Additional treatment such as RO may be necessary when the water quality target is more demanding.

Reverse Osmosis for Advanced Water Purification

RO is especially useful when the wastewater treatment project requires removal of dissolved substances that cannot be adequately removed through biological treatment and MBR filtration alone.

Typical RO treatment targets can include:

Total Dissolved Solids
Dissolved Salts
Conductivity
Chloride
Sulfate
Certain Heavy Metals
Dissolved Organic Matter
Selected Micropollutants
Other Dissolved Contaminants

The actual rejection performance depends on feedwater quality, membrane type, pressure, temperature, recovery rate, pH, and other operating parameters.

A pilot test or detailed water analysis is recommended for complex industrial wastewater before final RO equipment selection.

MBR + RO for Water Reuse

One of the main applications of an integrated MBR RO water filter system is wastewater recycling.

Treated wastewater can be converted into reusable water for selected industrial processes, cooling systems, equipment washing, irrigation, or other non-potable applications when the treated water meets the applicable quality requirements.

For example, an industrial MBR+RO project at a manufacturing facility was used to recycle treated wastewater for manufacturing processes and reported a substantial reduction in fresh-water consumption.

Pilot-scale research has also shown that MBR followed by RO can achieve high removal of selected inorganic contaminants and support reuse applications such as cooling and irrigation, depending on the treatment conditions.

Hollow Fiber MBR Membrane

Hollow fiber MBR membranes are commonly used in submerged membrane bioreactor systems.

The hollow fiber structure provides a large membrane area within a compact module. During operation, wastewater surrounds the membrane fibers while treated water passes through the membrane wall and enters the hollow fiber lumen.

Air scouring around the membrane module helps maintain membrane surface conditions and can reduce the accumulation of solids.

Important operating parameters include:

Membrane Flux
Transmembrane Pressure
Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids
Dissolved Oxygen
Sludge Retention Time
Hydraulic Retention Time
Aeration Rate
Membrane Area
Cleaning Frequency

The appropriate membrane module should be selected according to wastewater characteristics and required treatment capacity.

RO Membrane System Components

A typical reverse osmosis water filter system may include:

Feed Pump
Multimedia Filter
Activated Carbon Filter
Cartridge Filter
High-Pressure Pump
RO Membrane Housing
RO Membrane Elements
Pressure Gauges
Flow Meters
Conductivity Meter
Control Cabinet
Chemical Dosing System
CIP Cleaning System
Permeate Tank
Concentrate Discharge System

Not every project requires all components. The pretreatment configuration should be determined according to the actual MBR permeate quality and RO feedwater characteristics.

Membrane Fouling Control

Membrane fouling is an important consideration for both MBR and RO systems.

In MBR systems, fouling can result from suspended solids, colloids, organic matter, extracellular polymeric substances, and microbial products.

In RO systems, common fouling mechanisms include particulate fouling, organic fouling, biofouling, and mineral scaling.

An MBR-RO system therefore requires coordinated pretreatment and membrane management. Research on MBR-RO systems has shown that organic matter and inorganic salts in MBR effluent can contribute to downstream RO fouling, highlighting the importance of proper pretreatment and operating control.

Recommended maintenance includes:

Regular Pretreatment Inspection
MBR TMP Monitoring
RO Pressure Monitoring
Permeate Flow Monitoring
Conductivity Monitoring
Membrane Cleaning
Cartridge Filter Replacement
Sludge Management
Chemical Dosing Control
Pump Inspection
Instrument Calibration

Chemical Industry Wastewater
Electronics Industry Wastewater
Manufacturing Wastewater
Industrial Park Wastewater
Cooling Water Recycling
Process Water Recycling
