MBR membrane fiber equipment for municipal and brewery wastewater treatment. Hollow fiber MBR membranes combine biological treatment and membrane filtration for efficient industrial wastewater treatment, water reuse, and compact plant design..

MBR Membrane Fiber for Municipal and Brewery Wastewater Treatment Equipment

MBR Membrane Fiber is a core filtration component used in modern membrane bioreactor systems for municipal wastewater, brewery wastewater, food and beverage wastewater, and other industrial treatment applications. By combining biological wastewater treatment with membrane separation, an MBR system can provide high-quality treated water while maintaining a relatively compact plant footprint.

Hollow fiber membrane technology is especially suitable for MBR applications because many membrane fibers can be assembled into a compact module with a large effective filtration area. Commercial MBR technology is widely used for both municipal and industrial wastewater, and PVDF is one of the most prevalent membrane materials used in commercial MBR products.

For breweries and other food and beverage manufacturers, MBR technology can be integrated with pretreatment and biological processes to handle wastewater containing high concentrations of biodegradable organic matter. Pilot-scale research has evaluated both hollow fiber and flat sheet MBR configurations for food and beverage wastewater.

The MBR internally supported hollow fiber membrane made of PVDF membrane material is a new generation of high-performance product successfully launched by our company after years of research and development. This membrane is produced using a composite phase separation process, with polyester braided tubes as the support body. It has high strength (tensile strength ≥ 20.0MPa), anti stripping (peel strength ≥ 1.0MPa), high porosity (≥ 60%), and high flux (≥ 15L/m2 · h-0.01MPa). The filtration pore size of PVDF inner support membrane is 0.01~0.1 μ M.

What Is MBR Membrane Fiber?

MBR membrane fiber generally refers to hollow fiber membranes installed in a membrane bioreactor module. The fibers are thin, porous membrane tubes arranged into bundles and connected to headers or manifolds.

During operation, treated water passes through the membrane wall while activated sludge, suspended solids, and microorganisms are retained within the biological reactor. The membrane therefore performs the solid-liquid separation function that would otherwise require a conventional secondary clarifier.

Hollow fiber MBR membranes can be used in submerged or external configurations depending on the equipment design. Submerged systems place the membrane modules directly inside the bioreactor, while external systems circulate mixed liquor through membrane modules installed outside the biological tank.

The final membrane configuration should be selected according to wastewater characteristics, required capacity, treatment objectives, membrane flux, cleaning requirements, and available installation space.

How Does an MBR Membrane System Work?

A typical MBR wastewater treatment process includes several stages.

1. Pretreatment

Incoming wastewater first passes through screens and other pretreatment equipment to remove large solids, fibers, grit, hair, packaging materials, and other substances that could interfere with biological treatment or membrane operation.

Pretreatment is particularly important for brewery and food-processing wastewater because production facilities can generate suspended solids, yeast, organic residues, cleaning chemicals, and other variable contaminants.

2. Equalization

An equalization tank can balance variations in wastewater flow and pollutant concentration. This is useful for industrial facilities where wastewater generation changes according to production schedules, cleaning cycles, or shift patterns.

3. Biological Treatment

The wastewater enters an aeration or biological reactor where microorganisms break down biodegradable organic pollutants.

Depending on the required treatment process, the system may include aerobic, anoxic, or anaerobic zones for organic matter removal and nitrogen treatment.

4. Membrane Filtration

After biological treatment, the mixed liquor reaches the MBR membrane modules. The hollow fiber membrane separates treated water from activated sludge and suspended solids.

The filtered water, commonly called permeate, is collected and discharged or sent to additional treatment for reuse.

5. Sludge Management

A portion of the biological sludge is periodically removed to control mixed liquor concentration and maintain stable biological conditions.

MBR Membrane for Municipal Wastewater

Municipal wastewater is one of the major applications for MBR technology. Domestic sewage generally contains organic matter, suspended solids, nutrients, microorganisms, and other pollutants that require biological and physical treatment.

MBR technology combines suspended-growth biological treatment with membrane filtration, making it possible to produce high-quality effluent in a relatively compact treatment system. The U.S. EPA has also described MBR as a technology that combines biological treatment with filtration for municipal wastewater treatment.

Hollow fiber MBR membrane systems can be designed for:

Municipal sewage treatment plants
Residential communities
Hotels and resorts
Schools and campuses
Hospitals
Commercial buildings
Decentralized wastewater treatment
Municipal water reuse projects

For municipal projects where land is limited, MBR can be attractive because the membrane provides solid-liquid separation without depending on a large conventional secondary settling tank.

MBR Membrane for Brewery Wastewater

Brewery wastewater can be a challenging industrial wastewater stream because brewing, washing, cleaning, packaging, and production processes can generate wastewater with substantial biodegradable organic loading.

Brewery wastewater may contain yeast, carbohydrates, proteins, suspended solids, alcohol-related compounds, cleaning chemicals, and other organic materials. The exact wastewater characteristics vary significantly from one brewery to another.

An MBR system can be incorporated after suitable pretreatment and biological treatment to provide membrane-based solid-liquid separation.

A documented brewery MBR application at Lagunitas Brewing Company used MBR and RO technologies as part of a water reuse strategy, while research has also investigated long-term MBR operation treating brewery wastewater.

For brewery applications, the complete treatment train may include:

Coarse Screening
Fine Screening
Equalization
pH Adjustment
Dissolved Air Flotation Where Required
Anaerobic Treatment Where Appropriate
Aerobic Biological Treatment
MBR Membrane Filtration
RO Water Reuse
UV Disinfection

Not every brewery requires all of these processes. The actual configuration should be determined from wastewater testing and the required discharge or reuse quality.

Hollow Fiber MBR Membrane Advantages

Hollow fiber MBR membrane modules offer several potential advantages for industrial and municipal wastewater treatment.

High Membrane Surface Area

A large number of membrane fibers can be installed in a relatively compact module, allowing substantial filtration area within a limited tank volume.

Compact Equipment Design

Because membrane filtration replaces the conventional solid-liquid separation function of a secondary clarifier, the overall MBR plant can be designed with a smaller footprint in suitable applications.

High-Quality Filtration

The membrane barrier retains suspended solids and biomass while producing a clear permeate. MBR reviews identify high effluent quality and compact footprint among the important advantages of the technology.

Flexible Industrial Applications

The same basic MBR concept can be adapted to municipal sewage, brewery wastewater, food processing wastewater, pharmaceutical wastewater, textile wastewater, and many other industrial applications.

PVDF MBR Membrane Fiber

PVDF, or polyvinylidene fluoride, is widely used in commercial MBR membrane products. A review of commercial MBR products found PVDF to be the most prevalent membrane material among the products evaluated, with both flat sheet and hollow fiber configurations available.

PVDF membrane fibers can offer a combination of mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and suitability for repeated wastewater treatment and cleaning cycles.

Depending on the membrane manufacturer and module design, PVDF hollow fiber membranes may be produced with different pore structures, fiber dimensions, membrane areas, and operating parameters.

The appropriate membrane specification should always be matched to the actual wastewater and system design rather than selected only by membrane material.

Membrane Fouling Control

Membrane fouling is an important operating consideration for every MBR system.

Organic compounds, suspended solids, biological materials, inorganic deposits, and other contaminants can accumulate on membrane surfaces. If fouling is not properly controlled, membrane permeability can decrease and transmembrane pressure can increase.

A properly engineered system can use several strategies:

Effective Pretreatment
Stable Biological Operation
Appropriate Membrane Flux
Continuous or Intermittent Air Scouring
Membrane Relaxation
Backwashing
Chemical-Enhanced Cleaning
Periodic Chemical Cleaning
Proper Sludge Concentration Control

Research on brewery wastewater MBR operation has specifically examined fouling control and operation below critical flux conditions.

MBR Membrane Equipment for Industrial Wastewater

A complete industrial MBR system can include much more than the membrane module itself.

Typical equipment may include:

Mechanical Screen
Fine Screen
Equalization Tank
Pumps
Biological Reactor
Aeration Blower
MBR Membrane Module
Permeate Pump
Air Scouring System
Backwash System
Chemical Cleaning System
Sludge Pump
PLC Control Cabinet
Flow Meter
Pressure Sensors
Water Quality Monitoring Equipment

The system can be designed as fixed equipment, skid-mounted equipment, modular equipment, or containerized wastewater treatment equipment.

MBR Membrane Selection

Choosing the correct MBR membrane requires consideration of several parameters.

Wastewater Source: Municipal sewage and brewery wastewater have different characteristics and should not automatically use identical membrane operating conditions.

Flow Rate: Average and peak flow determine required membrane area and equipment capacity.

Influent Quality: COD, BOD, TSS, nitrogen, phosphorus, pH, temperature, oils, grease, and other parameters influence process design.

Membrane Type: Hollow fiber and flat sheet configurations have different structural and operating characteristics.

Membrane Material: PVDF and other membrane materials may be available depending on the application.

Required Effluent Quality: Discharge and reuse requirements determine the overall treatment process.

Maintenance Strategy: Cleaning frequency, spare modules, chemical cleaning facilities, and access for maintenance should be considered during system design.

MBR for Water Reuse

MBR technology is often considered when treated wastewater needs to meet a higher quality target or when downstream advanced treatment is planned.

For example, an MBR system can provide biological treatment and membrane solid-liquid separation before RO. This type of configuration can be useful for industrial facilities seeking to reduce freshwater consumption.

Brewery wastewater reuse is a practical example. The Lagunitas Brewing Company case describes the use of MBR and RO as part of an onsite water reuse system.

Additional processes such as RO, UV, activated carbon, or other polishing technologies can be selected according to the intended reuse application.
