Engine Electric Generator Set for Bio Gas Power Plant Generation Technical Parameters

Engine electric generator set for biogas power plant generation, designed to convert methane-rich biogas into reliable electricity for industrial, agricultural, and wastewater applications..

Environmental conditions and requirements for biogas

The Engine Electric Generator Set for Biogas Power Plant Generation is an energy conversion system designed to use methane-rich biogas as a fuel for electrical power generation. It is suitable for biogas power plants, anaerobic digestion facilities, wastewater treatment plants, livestock farms, agricultural operations, food-processing facilities, and other sites that produce recoverable biogas.

Biogas is commonly generated through the anaerobic digestion of organic materials. Depending on the feedstock and digestion process, the resulting gas contains methane, carbon dioxide, water vapor, hydrogen sulfide, and other trace components. The methane fraction provides the energy that can be converted into electricity through a gas engine and generator system.

The generator set can be integrated with an anaerobic digester, biogas storage system, gas purification equipment, gas pressure regulation equipment, electrical control system, and power distribution equipment to form a complete biogas power generation solution.

Actual power output, gas consumption, electrical efficiency, operating hours, and fuel requirements depend on the selected engine, generator, biogas composition, methane concentration, gas flow, load conditions, and system configuration.

The biogas generator set can operate stably and reliably under environmental conditions of -40ºC~+40ºC, relative humidity <90% (at 25ºC), and altitude ≤1000m. Under standard environmental conditions (atmospheric pressure 100KPa, ambient temperature: 25ºC, relative humidity 30%), the gas quality meets the standard conditions and can output rated power. Unit requirements for biogas
Within 1m of the unit's gas inlet pressure regulating valve,
1. Biogas temperature ≤40ºC;
2. Biogas pressure 3~10kPa, pressure change rate ≤1kPa/min;
3. The volume content of methane in biogas is not less than 40%, and the change rate is ≤2%/min;
4. H2S ≤20mg/Nm3;
5. NH3 ≤20mg/Nm3;
6. Impurity particle size ≤5μm, impurity content ≤30mg/Nm3;
7. Moisture content in biogas ≤40g/Nm3.
Special instructions are required for biogas with a methane volume content of ≤50%.
If the sulfur and ammonia content in the combustible gas is high, it will not only seriously corrode the spark plug electrode, but also increase the acid value in the engine oil, corrode the internal parts of the unit, and easily generate sediment, increasing corrosion and wear to the engine.

Biogas Engine Generator Set

The core of the system is a gas engine connected to an electrical generator. The engine uses methane-rich biogas as fuel and converts the chemical energy in the gas into mechanical energy.

The generator then converts mechanical energy into electrical energy for use by the facility or other suitable electrical loads.

A properly configured biogas engine generator can provide a practical method of recovering energy from organic waste that would otherwise require treatment, flaring, or disposal.

The engine should be specifically selected for the available biogas quality because contaminants in raw biogas can affect combustion, lubrication, engine components, and maintenance requirements.

Biogas Power Plant Generation

A Biogas Power Plant Generator can serve as the main electrical generation unit within a larger biogas energy project.

The overall power plant may include feedstock handling, anaerobic digestion, biogas collection, gas storage, gas purification, gas cooling, gas pressure regulation, generator sets, electrical control equipment, and power distribution systems.

For larger installations, multiple generator sets can potentially be operated together according to the required generation capacity and project design.

This modular approach can provide flexibility when the available biogas production changes or when the plant needs to expand its power generation capacity.

Converting Biogas Into Electricity

The primary purpose of the generator set is to convert the energy contained in methane-rich biogas into useful electricity.

The process begins with biogas production through anaerobic digestion. The gas is then collected and, when necessary, cleaned and conditioned before being supplied to the engine.

Inside the gas engine, the methane-containing fuel is combusted under controlled conditions. The engine drives the generator, which produces electrical power.

The generated electricity can be supplied to compatible facility loads such as pumps, mixers, blowers, wastewater treatment equipment, lighting, refrigeration, processing machinery, and other electrical systems.

Anaerobic Digestion Integration

Anaerobic digestion is commonly used to produce biogas from biodegradable organic materials.

Suitable feedstocks may include livestock manure, agricultural residues, food-processing waste, municipal organic waste, sewage sludge, and other biodegradable materials.

During digestion, microorganisms break down organic matter in an oxygen-limited environment and generate biogas. The biogas can then be recovered and used as fuel for the generator set.

The amount and quality of biogas depend on feedstock characteristics, organic loading, digestion temperature, retention time, solids concentration, and other process conditions.

Biogas Quality Requirements

Biogas composition can vary significantly between different projects. Methane concentration, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, moisture, siloxanes, particulates, and other contaminants can influence generator performance.

Hydrogen sulfide is particularly important because it can contribute to corrosion and oil degradation. Moisture can cause condensation, while siloxanes may form deposits during combustion.

For this reason, a biogas power plant may require gas treatment before the fuel enters the generator engine.

The appropriate gas conditioning system should be selected based on an actual biogas analysis.

Biogas Cleaning And Conditioning

Depending on the gas composition, the system may include desulfurization, gas drying, condensate removal, filtration, gas cooling, siloxane reduction, pressure regulation, or other treatment stages.

Gas cleaning can help protect the engine and support more stable operation.

The required treatment level depends on the engine manufacturer's fuel specifications and the actual composition of the biogas.

For B2B projects, customers should provide representative gas analysis data when available so that suitable gas conditioning equipment can be evaluated.

Reliable Electrical Power Generation

Biogas generator sets can provide electricity for facilities that have a relatively continuous biogas supply.

This can be particularly useful for wastewater treatment plants, livestock farms, food-processing plants, and agricultural operations where organic waste is continuously generated.

The actual power generation profile depends on gas production and the facility's electrical demand.

For applications with variable biogas production, gas storage or multiple generator units may be considered to improve operational flexibility.

Power For Wastewater Treatment Plants

Wastewater treatment plants can consume electricity for pumping, aeration, mixing, sludge processing, filtration, and other treatment operations.

Where anaerobic digestion produces recoverable biogas, a generator set can convert this gas into electricity that can potentially be used by the treatment facility.

This creates an integrated approach in which wastewater is treated, biogas is recovered, and part of the recovered energy is converted into useful electrical power.

The actual energy balance depends on wastewater characteristics, biogas production, treatment processes, and plant electricity demand.

Agricultural And Livestock Applications

Livestock manure and agricultural organic waste can be suitable feedstocks for anaerobic digestion.

Farms with sufficient organic waste may use anaerobic digesters to produce biogas and then use the gas to generate electricity.

Potential applications include dairy farms, pig farms, poultry operations, agricultural processing facilities, and integrated livestock farming projects.

The generator can be installed as part of a complete manure management and renewable energy system.

Food Processing And Organic Waste

Food-processing facilities can generate wastewater and organic residues with relatively high biodegradable content.

Anaerobic digestion can be used in suitable applications to convert this organic material into biogas.

The resulting biogas can then be supplied to a gas engine generator set after appropriate treatment.

Potential industries include breweries, beverage processing, food factories, fruit and vegetable processing, meat processing, and other facilities with suitable organic waste streams.

CHP And Combined Energy Applications

A biogas engine can also be incorporated into a combined heat and power system when there is a suitable demand for recovered engine heat.

Heat can potentially be recovered from engine cooling circuits and exhaust gases for applications such as digester heating, hot water production, process heating, or facility heating.

A CHP configuration should be evaluated according to the available heat demand, operating schedule, engine configuration, and overall plant design.

Electrical Control And Monitoring

A complete generator set can include an electrical control panel for monitoring and managing generator operation.

Depending on the configuration, the control system may monitor voltage, current, frequency, engine speed, temperature, oil pressure, gas pressure, operating hours, and alarm conditions.

Protection functions can include overload, high temperature, low oil pressure, overspeed, abnormal voltage, abnormal frequency, and other engine or electrical protection features.

For larger biogas power plants, multiple generator sets can be coordinated through a centralized control system.

Grid-Connected And Off-Grid Applications

The generator set can be configured for different electrical applications depending on the project.

For off-grid systems, generated electricity can supply local facility loads or an isolated electrical network.

For grid-connected applications, synchronization and protection equipment may be required to connect the generator to the local electrical grid.

The appropriate electrical configuration depends on local regulations, grid requirements, generator specifications, and project design.

Maintenance And Long-Term Operation

Routine maintenance is essential for reliable gas engine generator operation.

Maintenance requirements may include inspection or replacement of lubricating oil, filters, spark plugs, belts, hoses, cooling-system components, gas-system components, batteries, and other wear parts.

Biogas generator systems may require additional maintenance related to gas purification equipment because gas contaminants can influence engine oil and combustion components.

Maintenance intervals should follow the engine and generator manufacturer's recommendations and be adjusted according to actual operating conditions.

Safety And Environmental Requirements

Biogas is combustible and may contain hydrogen sulfide or other hazardous components. Proper engineering and safety procedures are therefore essential.

A biogas power plant should include suitable gas piping, pressure regulation, ventilation, gas leak detection, emergency shutdown functions, electrical protection, fire safety measures, and operator training as required.

Environmental considerations may include exhaust emissions, noise, wastewater discharge, digestate management, gas leakage prevention, and local permitting requirements.

Customized Biogas Power Solutions

Every biogas project has different feedstock, gas production, methane concentration, electrical demand, and installation conditions.

Important design information may include biogas flow rate, methane concentration, hydrogen sulfide concentration, gas pressure, moisture content, expected operating hours, electrical load, voltage, frequency, and whether heat recovery is required.

Based on these parameters, the appropriate engine, generator, gas treatment system, control panel, cooling system, and electrical configuration can be evaluated.
